What is NIFS, where is it located & what are the aims of NIFS?

Aims: Initiate, promote and engage in advanced research in fundamental studies for the enhancement of scientific knowledge, human resource and national development.
Why is NIFS unique?
Being the only research institute which, by its Act, has the main objective of engaging in basic research, the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) has been in the forefront of scientific research in Sri Lanka ever since its founding in 1981. It also has a greater emphasis on ‘basic research for national development’. The projects are carefully planned and executed scientifically in order to provide the basic research that ultimately leads to useful applications to cater national demands. NIFS collaborates with a number of other state sector and private organizations, and world renowned international institutes for the advancement of science. Training young researchers for capacity building and dissemination of research findings to the scientific community and the general public are also ensured. With its outstanding research facilities and the highly dedicated and qualified research staff, NIFS aims to reach greater heights in its future endeavours.

There are more than 20 research project categorized under six Research Units.They are,

In addition to research activities, NIFS focuses on fostering the exchange of the scientific information to the scientific community and to promote the public understanding of Science. NIFS organizes several activities such as conferences, workshops, hands on lab sessions, Science camps and several e - projects.

You can join our research teams at different levels; as a Scientists, Research Collaborator, Research Assistant, Postgraduate/Undergraduate student to carry out research projects, and pre-university research student or as a non-academic staff member.

- Sri Lanka Journals Online (SLJOL) - serving as an online platform to access full text of 73 peer reviewed Sri Lankan journals.

How to get registered under school science society programme?
By submitting a duly completed application of school science society programme through principal. The application is available at the NSF website through, science/ School Science Society Programme; in all three languages. After receiving the applications, NSF provides a registration number to the School Science Society which is posted to the Principal of the relevant school.
What is the upper limit of funds for Competitive Research Grants?
There is no upper limit as such, but each budget item should be well justified
How can I get registered in the Science and Technology Management Information System (STMIS) at the National Science Foundation (NSF)?
If you possess at least a basic degree in S&T related subject field and engaged in activities relevant to S&T sector, you are eligible to register in the STMIS.
