What is NIFS, where is it located & what are the aims of NIFS?

Why is NIFS unique?

Being the only research institute which, by its Act, has the main objective of engaging in basic research, the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) has been in the forefront of scientific research in Sri Lanka ever since its founding in 1981. It also has a greater emphasis on ‘basic research for national development’. The projects are carefully planned and executed scientifically in order to provide the basic research that ultimately leads to useful applications to cater national demands. NIFS collaborates with a number of other state sector and private organizations, and world renowned international institutes for the advancement of science. Training young researchers for capacity building and dissemination of research findings to the scientific community and the general public are also ensured. The application is available at the NSF website through, science/ School Science Society Programme; in all three languages. After receiving the applications, NSF provides a registration number to the School Science Society which is posted to the Principal of the relevant school.
