Why is NIFS unique?

Being the only research institute which, by its Act, has the main objective of engaging in basic research, the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS) has been in the forefront of scientific research in Sri Lanka ever since its founding in 1981. It also has a greater emphasis on ‘basic research for national development’. The projects are carefully planned and executed scientifically in order to provide the basic research that ultimately leads to useful applications to cater national demands. NIFS collaborates with a number of other state sector and private organizations, and world renowned international institutes for the advancement of science.
